The DAT Top Three - Alpha Females on The Walking Dead

Fight the dead. Fear the living. Put the damn seat down. I’m pretty sure that’s the tagline for The Walking Dead. Having a group of only men isn’t enough to survive the zombie apocalypse, well, for obvious reasons. But in addition to their child-bearing chops, these female warriors also must be hardened, tough and ready to fight. And when I say the DAT Top three alpha females of The Walking Dead are full of bad-assery, I’m not just making up words. I am, but you know what I mean. The women can’t cower and cry when the walkers arrive. They have to fight and sometimes the living are more of a threat than the dead. If I had to face the end with a femme fatale next to me, you can be sure it’d be one of these alpha females of The Walking Dead.

The DAT Top Three - Alpha Males on The Walking Dead

Fight the dead. Fear the living. When you find yourself surrounded by The Walking Dead, what will you do to survive? Who will you turn to for protection against the zombie walkers? If television has taught us anything about the zombie apocalypse it’s that you’ll die without a strong alpha male in your group. Whether your leader wears an evil eye patch or a mountain man beard, an alpha male must lead the quest for survival. The Walking Dead is chocked full of kick-ass characters including several alpha females we’ll talk about at another time. In this installment of the DAT Top Three, we’re going to recognize those alpha males on the show who keep us coming back for more.

The DAT Top Three - Classic Interviews

Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to talk with incredible people. About three years ago I started conducting interviews and posting the transcripts on my blog. In this somewhat different version of The DAT Top Three, I’d like to share these with you. Go to http://darkartstheater.com/classicinterviews to get access to all of these fascinating interviews. I’ll put that link in the show notes as well.

The DAT Top Three - Modern Horror TV Shows

TV has come a long way, baby. Production value and writing continues to improve and with independent content producers getting into the game, some new television shows look as good as motion pictures. And yet, horror remains tucked away in the dark corners and out of the mainstream. Our best kept secrets hidden. However, some shows have crossed over into popular culture and those chosen few are the ones we’re celebrating here on the DAT Top Three Modern Horror TV Shows.

The DAT Top Three - Classic Horror TV Shows

It’s not always easy to bring horror to the small screen. While movies tend to be created for a specific audience, television has had to play it down the middle; appealing to a wider and more mainstream audience. For that reason, only a few horror TV shows remain in our collective memory. Those that have had a cult following continue to entertain fans via streaming or DVD collections. If you’re looking to binge watch some horror, these three classic shows would be a good place to start.

The DAT Top Three – Scary Amusement Park Rides

The screams. The moans. The despair. The waiting room in a dentist’s office? Perhaps. But fear is also part of most great scary amusement park rides. Whether you call them “dark rides” or “laff in the darks,” this frightening form of entertainment has been around for well over a hundred years, thrilling kids and adults alike. Having somewhat of an affinity for all things horror, I tend to seek these out rides wherever I go. Here are three of my favorite scary amusement park rides, all of which I’ve ridden. Multiple times. As a child. And an adult.

The DAT Top Three – Haunted Cities - New Orleans, LA

New Orleans will steal your heart, and if you’re not careful, it’ll get your soul too. I’ve visited the Big Easy a number of times and whether it’s beignets and chicory coffee at Café Du Monde or live jazz in the French Quarter, there’s nothing like NOLA. But with that Old World charm comes a long, sordid history dating back to our nation’s earliest days. Some of the tortured souls of the past can still be found on the streets of New Orleans and in this installment of the DAT Top Three Haunted Cities.

The DAT Top Three – Heaviest Metals

I love heavy metal. I also love heavy metals. Not those kind above atomic number 104. You know, the fake Hollywood variety crafted by scientists blasting particles at each other in an accelerator. They are the fake double D’s of the periodic table. I like the old fashioned elements, like Uranium, Plutonium and Lead. Yeah, I think today we’re going to get the lead out.

The DAT Top Three – Black Sabbath Songs (Dio)

When Ronnie James Dio took over for Ozzy Osbourne in 1979, Black Sabbath had a new singer and a new sound. While still undeniably dark and heavy, Dio brought a more polished, expanded range to the vocal melodies and his raw power immediately endeared him to fans. Although cancer took Dio from us in 2010, his heavy metal legacy will live on. And in that spirit I give you the DAT Top Three Black Sabbath Songs Featuring Ronnie James Dio. Horns up, f*ckers.

The DAT Top Three – Led Zeppelin Songs

This analysis of my beloved Led Zeppelin is fun and painful at the same time. Having been a huge fan of the seminal rock band of our time, it’s hard for me to escape their magnetic influence. Whether it’s in my music or my writing, the dark, veiled imagery of Led Zeppelin is timelessly seductive. And the music kicks ass. I mean, Jimmy Page. Seriously. With a cringe and a smile, I present my Top Three Led Zeppelin songs.

The DAT Top Three – Horror Novel Villains

We all root for the hero but we all want to be the villain. While every great story has a bad guy, some are more interesting than others and not all bad guys are guys. Horror novel villains scare us, and at the same time, we want to live vicariously through them, doing evil deeds without fear of consequence. You will certainly disagree with my Top Three choices but you can’t deny the power of the horror novel villain. Carpe villanus!

The DAT Top Three – Black Sabbath Songs (Ozzy)

If I could only listen to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath for the rest of my life, I’d still die a happy metalhead. While Zeppelin touched upon the black arts and occult imagery, Sabbath went for the full-on assault of dark, raw power. Fans often speak of Sabbath as two entities, the band led by original singer Ozzy Osbourne and the other incarnation fronted by heavy metal icon, Ronnie James Dio. In this DAT Top Three, I’ll be unveiling my top three Black Sabbath songs featuring Ozzy Osbourne.

The DAT Top Three – Coolest Undead Creatures

As they say, live death to the fullest. Some of the creatures who return from the grave are way cooler than others. Saints and angels might be the guardians of Heaven, but we’ve become fascinated with the  undead from the wrong side of the tracks. Whether you believe they’re commanded by the devil or are simply souls doomed to wander the Earth for eternity, these creatures are the coolest undead.
